Backups you have never restored from are not backups

Backups you have never restored from are not backups
Insights

Every company we take on has backups. Roughly half have backups that would
actually bring the business back.

The usual failures

The job runs but
skips the database because it is locked. The retention window is shorter than the time
it takes to notice a problem. The backup sits on the same server it is protecting.

What we do instead

A quarterly restore drill against a real target, timed,
with the result written into the monthly report. If it cannot be restored inside the
agreed window, it is a finding, not a footnote.
